With so many men’s watches on the market, it is difficult to know where to begin when trying to make a choice. Watches are not just essential time pieces but fashion and style statements as well. There are two main categories of watch movements, quartz and mechanical movements. Quartz movements operate by battery and are extremely accurate, losing only a few seconds per month, and the convenience of only having to replace the battery every one and a half to two years adds to its appeal. Mechanical movements area powered by either manual winding or from the movement created by the wearer’s arm. These watches have a long life and are cherished as being traditional watches with the internal workings that have operated down the ages. Many top of the range watches use mechanical movements.

Case materials vary from funky plastic in garish colours to quality metals such as pure gold, silver, platinum and even diamond encrusted cases. I was shopping for groceries and a few toys for my children the other day. I was about to go home when I ran into my sister. She was shopping for watch bands that did not have any kind of metal on them. Her skin is allergic to metals and breaks out in a rash that itches every time she comes into contact with certain metals. My sister tried leather watch bands but the metal face of the watch still triggered her skin allergy. I told her that since I was finished with my shopping, I would be glad to help her.

We went through several jewelry stores, but we were unable to find watches that were completely metal free. It was lunch time so the both of us went to a restaurant in the mall for lunch. While we were waiting for our food, I noticed that the woman in the booth next to us was showing her purchases to her husband. She had a box that held several different watchbands and watch faces. They were made of fabrics of different colors.

They were attached to the watch by running them under the back of the watch, so the fabric was between the skin and the back of the watch. She told us that she had bought the watch bands at one of the large department stores in the mall. The woman also told us that they were on clearance and there were several of them left.

We headed to the department store after we finished our lunch. They did have several of the boxes of watch bands left. Some of the bands were made from decorative fabrics, but there was also a leather band that came with the set. The watch sat on top of the band so that the leather was between the skin and the metal. The bands can be adjusted by sliding the fabric or leather through a plastic buckle. The box held six different bands and watch faces.

My sister was interested in a box that had several bands but she did not like a watch face that had stones edging it. The clerk at that store informed us that my sister could create whatever combination of the faces and the bands. She told her to pick out six bands and watch faces she liked and then she placed them all in one box. The clerk told us that it was the final day of the sale, so the rest of the boxes were going back to the manufacturer the next day. My sister was very lucky to end up with a great bargain of six watch bands at eighty percent off.

With so many men’s watches on the market, it is difficult to know where to begin when trying to make a choice. Watches are not just essential time pieces but fashion and style statements as well. There are two main categories of watch movements, quartz and mechanical movements. Quartz movements operate by battery and are extremely accurate, losing only a few seconds per month, and the convenience of only having to replace the battery every one and a half to two years adds to its appeal. Mechanical movements area powered by either manual winding or from the movement created by the wearer’s arm. These watches have a long life and are cherished as being traditional watches with the internal workings that have operated down the ages. Many top of the range watches use mechanical movements.

Case materials vary from funky plastic in garish colours to quality metals such as pure gold, silver, platinum and even diamond encrusted cases. Crystals, dials and faces also vary, according to taste, and may incorporate dazzling mother of pearl, precious metals and stones. It is advisable that if you are opting for a fun and funky watch that is very much for now, it is best to go for the quartz mechanism, with plastic, aluminium or rubber casing and the option of interchangeable watch bands for variety. The quartz watch does need to be kept away from magnets, however, as it will seriously disturb the quartz movement.

A more substantial and sturdy watch will be needed for sports activities. Rubber is an ideal case material here, as it takes the knocks and absorbs the sweat, and titanium is ideal for contact free sports like jogging and golf. Inclusion of a chronograph is useful as it’s sub dials can measure split seconds accurately, and rotating bezels can be used as timers.

For a long lasting and classically stylish every day watch, go for a leather wrist band and avoid any on trend watches as these are bound to date within a year or two. A simple face with Roman numerals and a good metal used on the case and bracelet will look good with both business suit or jeans. For a special occasion, great care should be taken in your selection in order to avoid paying through the nose for a mass produced item that turns up every where. This is the watch that will become a family heirloom and if you want to pass it down the generations it needs to be of good quality to last. Good quality workmanship and the finest materials are essential, as well as the use of precious metals on the case and bracelet, and a few jewels incorporated into the face. Choose a simple black or brown leather strap and avoid colours.
